The places of the last outpost of the Senese Republic
BUONCONVENTO – MONTALCINO – ABBEY OF SAINT ANTIMO
This bike tour of the land of the Brunello wine departs from Buonconvento, with it’s enchanted medieval stone walls, where, in 1313, the Emperor Henry VII of Luxemborg died. We pedal towards Montalcino using both asphalted and dirt roads, and pass through beautiful scenery with vineyards as far as the eye can see. After visiting the town, which was the last out post of the Senese republic, we follow gently downhill for a few kilometers towards the wonderful romanesque Abbey of Saint Antimo. The abbey was founded by Charlemagne and is famous for the gregorian chant of it’s monks. The tour includes a visit to the cellar where the authentic sienese wine is produced.
The production of the wine from the grape to the bottle will be explained. The wine tour finishes with a tasting of three wines. This is accompanied by a selection of Tuscan salami, local pecorino cheese and honey, bread and extra virgin olive oil.
